Free vs paid listings
It’s still possible to get listed in most of the search engines (and directories) for free, but ‘free’ inclusion often comes with a hidden cost: delayed indexing, if at all. When you’re looking to get listed on search engines as soon as possible, you need to start thinking of using paid listings. Google, for example, has a paid listing system (AdWords) that helps new websites that are not indexed by Google yet to get instant exposure on a wide scale. Overture has a similar implementation.
Paid listings give you a head start in terms of instant visibility. If you intelligently continue your SEO, your link building campaign would start to show positive results by the first month or so. The extra exposure afforded by paid listings combined with a variety of inbound links (extremely important for new websites, as Google themselves say on their website) helps you get your website in search engine results a lot quicker.

I hope this helps!
