Ok, I want to market one particular item I sell. Lets call it a widget 500. What is the best way to do this?

At the moment if you search for it on G then I come about 50 or maybe better with the url www.mysiteurl.com/search.asp?modelno=widget500.

Would I be better to:

Try to get lots of links to the above link.

Make a new page widget500.asp and market that.

Creating the unique page for each product, you will get listing in google in normal way. But the page which you generated must be indexed by Google. If you create a good navigator , sitemap so your product will be listed in google in high position.

If it's a really, really important product and it's only one (or just a few on the site), I'd give it a special page of its own in addition to the catalog page.

You generally have more control over a static page and it's optimization than with one that's dynamic within a catalog, and if you route the navigation properly and work on good text for that page, as well as linking to the catalog page from it, my feeling is that there's a chance to compete more effectively.
