Seperating domain name words with a hyphen

Do hyphens help search engines read domain names?

I have been told that by seperating words with a dash/hyphen in a domain name makes them easier to read for search engines.
For example, 'www.example-example.com' would be more effective than 'www.example.com'. The former could potentially get listed in searches for example as well as 'example', whereas the latter would only get results for searches on 'example example'.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct...?

Actually, that throws up another questions...;)
Is it simply a matter of buying the extra domain name and pointing to the other, or should I create a 'double' site in a seprate folder. My concern here is that all the pages can be picked up by search engines as both 'www.word1word2.com/page.html' as well as 'www.word1-word2.com/page.html'.
How can I achieve this without upsetting the search engines...?
