help with optimization with new retail site

after selling on ebay for years, I've finally launched my own website. I'm new to this whole SEO thing and need some pointers.

is there a limit on how many keywords I can have in my metatag and is it better to keep it under a certain number of keywords?

i read a post here that says a link from a PR8 website will automatically give me a PR7 ranking, is that true?
Once I get the PR7 ranking does that mean I will be a PR7 forever?

I'm thinking about purchasing some links to boost my page ranking, does it matter if the links to my website is not relevant to my own site? (lingerie retail)

any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi brainstormer.

The "keywords" metatag isn't worth much, some SEO people skip it entirely, it can even hurt you if you stuff it full of too many words, or words that aren't showing on your pages. Much more important tags are title and description, in that order.

I doubt you'll get PR 7 from one link from a pr8 page, and this would depend anyways on the number of links that pr8 page had on it, as well as other factors, eg., is that page in the same topic range as yours. Your page can go up and down in page rank, even if it's linked from a pr8 page. Remember, it does matter *which page* links you - a pr8 homepage site could have a lot of pr0 pages inside.

Yes, it does matter whether people linking to you are in your general topic area or not.

Before purchasing links, I'd really read around here a lot more. Also try reading some of the articles in [searchengineworld.com...] - many are a bit old, but they're still good!

I read somewhere that links I receive as well as external links to other websites helps my page rank.

I do not have any external links to other websites currently and really do not want to fill my page with external links either since this is a retail site.. but does it make a difference and if it does, can I put it at the footer so it is not as prominent to get the same result (higher pr)?

I sell lingerie, so what would a "relevant" higher PR link be? any retail site or does it have to be clothing related to be "relevant"? Would I be penalized or blacklistd if the links are irrelevant to my site?

can someone recommend me to a reputable place to buy PR links that maybe relevant to my site?

I know that its better to just optimize my site and submit it to dmoz and build my pr slowly but halloween is right around the corner and its my busiest time of the year, even busier than Christmas so I'm trying to find a way to raise my PR fast. Thanks.

sorry for posting so many questions at once...

I found a place where they auction PR links and came across some adult PR link auctions.

If i have a lot of adult sites linking to me (which in a business sense might not be bad since I sell lingerie and costumes) will that hurt me as far as where and how the search engines place and rank me?
