Does any one know where or who I could speak to about purchasing search engine technology?

The software that sits on the server that spiders the web, indexes etc.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

Well, it's not for sale, but www.nutch.org has an open source search engine based around apache's lucene.

Never used it, but I have used lucene on it own. I was impressed by lucene's capabilities.
