Question about placement...

If you just submit the base link to your site to Google (for instance), and it automatically spiders the rest of your pages on the site...is it necessary to have META tags for anything other than the front page?

Google will index your site much faster if you work on getting inbound links. Submitting to google with 0 inbound links may never get your site indexed.

If you are going to use meta tags, use unique tags for each page of your site; this will give the most benifit.

Some say don't bother. None of my sites are in any danger of going over in bandwidth and load fairly quickly, so I use them. The definately won't hurt and while G seems to ignore them, some SE's still use them.

META tags are not real important when it comes to G. If you have a lot of pages it is better you spend your time on other things like getting links and doing some on page SEO. If you just have some free time and don't feel like doing the other things then have fun. There are many other things that are way more important than META tags. You need a Title, Hx tags and repeat your kw as much as you can without loseing visiotrs because of a stupid looking site. I don't know if it ever went away but kw density will do wonders these days. I found this out by accident. I have some site map pages that repeat the same phrase 80 times with just the last word being different. Those suckers rank all over the place even over pages that I optimized for that specific term without the suffix word. I didn't even have a real title or h1 tag. I had to make a content page out of my sitemap pages because it was getting so many visits. Also link out to authority sites with the anchor text of your kw specially the ones that are in the top 5 for your term.

All this said you really won't get anywhere without lots of incomeing links.
