Do these matter anymore?

Hi

I promote a mortgage site and it is ranking high on yahoo. I have metatags on each page that are the same
on each page but the words and phrases I show up on are from the context on my site and not the metatags. I was reading that these don't do much anymore for some engines but they do for others?

It is not ranking on Google. I guess this is because
I have not submitted it to DMOZ?

Can anyone help or point me to answers?
