1. How do you go about registering a site with a search engine in the first place?
2. I have a competitor [snip] that appears at the top of almost any search in all the top search engines using a variety of related keywords, how are they doing this?
3. What things do search engines focus on to rank site's?
Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

To add your url/site to google, just go to www.google.com/addurl , its free and google would index your site within few weeks. With yahoo, you have choice of paying ($299) for faster inclusion or you can add your site to yahoo for free if you are ready to wait. The best thing to get your site indexed or registered would be getting indound links from other websites.Whenever SE's will crawl those websites, they will follow the link and crawl ur site too.

They are ofcourse doing great deal of search engine optimization and mus have really good, relevant content (Text), and/ or good number of sites linking to them and combination of other things like simple design (HTML) and structure and alot of other things.
3. What things do search engines focus on to rank site's?
Different SE's focus on different things for ranking your site, but basic combination is same, Content, structure, links, and few other things. If you stress on these, you would be in good condition. Stay away from spamm or any other malicious methods, I just got a client who has been banned from google and i have to work twice hard to get him back to google and then to the top.
