Just had a thought - could be a load of cobblers but I thought I'd bring it up.

One of my sites recently made number 1 in AV.com on some pretty competitve keywords ( Well I think they're competitive) anyway...

The site has quite a few real audio files on it - when I first started constructing the site I was quite lazy, and kept the real audio files in the root, and still do (waiting for someone to tell me that's very naughty...)

Getting to the point...I was basically wondering whether this may have been a factor that helped my ranking ??

Any thoughts? Or am I being plain stupid?

Now that it has become a bit of a steel cage death match between Real Audio and Microsoft formats, I would not be surprised to see Alta (now rumored to be highly annoyed with microsoft) promote RA files. It could also be that Alta's multimedia search engine ran into the RA's and decided to promote the pages up in rank because of it. Alta is by far the worst "format" rankings abuser of all the big engines. They've run the gambit of promoting then blocking formats and pages from asp, shtml, php, to front page tags and certain affiliate links (link exchange).

Mmmmm. Interesting one.

Thanks for your input.

And HALLO Brett heard a lot about you. I think I am going to spend more time in this particular searchengine forum site from now on.

You lot here seem a lot more welcoming than others in some forums I've been to. Not that there weren't some marvellous people there too! :)

Hmmm.... besides RA, do you know of any other formats AV may be favoring right now? *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

yep, wever always wondered whether AV favours sites with their AV Search boxes and Google likewise with their own. It makes absolutely good business sense and it would be pretty hard to prove

Thanks NiceBloke, welcome to the forums. I would hit the multimedia search [altavista.com] engine and see if you can find any of your RealAudio files in their database.

Sorry mivox, no tips at current. We were doing real good when AV was updating regularly, but now that they are not adding any new pages, it is rather difficult to algo investigate.

Thanks Brett.

Stranger and stranger...

None of them are in there searched under every conceivable term.

Maybe they're about to update the multimedia index???

Goodness knows. I really did expect to find them there!

Well, it could have just been a case of timing. You'd updated the site and it fell in alignment with the current AV algo. They did have a minor update on Monday. They've been periodically updating some sectors of the db. I moved all over the place from last friday to monday under some minor keywords, but didn't move a lick under some competitive kw's from the same site.

ebb and flow of the algo...
