Hi,

Have been trying to track down an upto date statistic for the different percentages between what search engines account for globally and what all other sources account for.

My own personal take on website marketing is that search engines are way too overrated but the stat I have that backs up the fact is around 3 years' old. It states that search sites accounted for just 7% of all traffic.

Do you have a more upto date statistic or site you could direct me to in my quest?

Cheers

I don't know any newer statistics, Mike, but things have changed quite a bit in those 3 years. Worldwide there are many millions of people who did not use search engines then but do now.

I've got about 50 clients that would say its more like 90%. Obviously a big site like Amazon or Ebay may only get 7% from search engines, but for companies that are not a household name, the % from SEs can be absolutely huge.

Our search traffic is up around 10-15% of total traffic.

Thanks for your replies.

I have heard from a number of people who believe that 15% is the most you "should be getting" from search engines if you market your site effectively everywhere else - links, directories, affiliates etc.

I will continue my hunt for a definitive answer on this!

Thanks again,

Mike Cheney

Also depends on the type of site too in my opinion. Affiliate vs. merchant vs. type of advertising the site does vs. how much effort the site has put into SEO/SEM - etc etc
