I was wondering what tips people had out there for moving your site up the rankings of Google, Yahoo etc. I have heard everything from trying to get your HTML to validate, relevant exchanged links to name a few.

Has anyone been sucessful using programs such as Web Position gold?

I have to say, it amazes me how lazy some folks are when they first join onto webmaster world (not just yourself webber1223, and welcome here by the way) The library link at the top would be a first great place to check into. As well as doing a search of the site will turn up more terrific threads to read. I would also recommend this [webmasterworld.com...]

Webber, Web Position Gold, from what I recall reading about it, could be dodgy.

The best way to move up in the serps for all of the SE's is to get quality, pertinent, incoming links, add content often on new pages, and do basic things like make sure you have the main kw's in the titles, (not repeated in a spammy way), variations of your kw's in the text, used in a natural way, and navigation that allows spiders to find the entire site easily from the /index.htm

Content and good links is the biggest part of it. Be very careful about reciprocal links... look closely at the site before you trade links. If they're dodgy, linking to them can cause damage.

First of all let me say I am not a lazy person. What I was asking was the basics of what works and what to read up on. I was not asking for everyone to list A-Z everything I need to do to my site to make it work!

I have read up on different SEO ideas and suggestions and to be honest with you quite a few of them are often challenged by other people who have had different experiences. Thanks for your input though I will be careful how I word any more questions I have!

A post here that I've found very useful is:

PS. I don't think you're lazy ;) The point of a forum is to ask questions and for people to answer them. You're new here, you're not to know that it's been asked before!
