page naming conventions

pagename, page_name, page-name or what?

Presently, we have our pages named as pagename_widgets, where page and name are two separate words, sometimes a person's first and last names.

In the last six months, we've painstakingly built out content pages and developed link relationships with key sites -- thanks to much advice found reading WebmasterWorld.com. And this work has paid off in that we are now being found for two dozen key two word search terms in our industry.

I should also say that our meta-tags and title values actually utilize the actual separate words -- Page and Name, the first and last name or whatever. On the content page, Page Name appears to promote relevancy. But nowhere does pagename appear in either the title or the content.

My question is: would it be best to keep the naming convention for the files as pagename_widgets? Or would it best to switch over to page_name_widgets or even page-name-widgets?

In terms of boolean search, it seems that a term can be found in the context of a URL. It doesn't need the dashes or underscores.

Yet about half of our competitors utilize this naming convention. How important is this naming convention in the search engines indexing file names?

If the pages are ranking then leave them alone. URL's are good but not worth losing what you got. I would leave them. That is just my 2 cents.
