Search Engines - Where to begin?

Hi, there

I'm new to this forum - so go easy on me :)

Currently I run a small mobile phone website (not sure if I'm allowed to mention it so I won't for now) thats been going for about 2 years now.

Up till now we have promoting the site through affliate channels and its going well but we need to start driving more quality traffic. We think search engines are the way to go - but not too sure how to start out.

We have been told we can learn the trade - which I'm prepared to do, buy some software to do the hard work, or to employ someone in that field.

My question is - what advise can you guys give me reguarding the 3 options ie pros & cons.

I have searched around this forum and found alot posts about search engine promotion - but I would appreciate any advice you have.
