Hi,

Is it more likely to get the top few spots on a results page for a single word keyword in the main root domain or a sub-page / landing page?

If you mean the difference between landing on [example.com...] or
[example.com...]

then i would say the first. but then again, lets say page.htm stands for "lyrics" and the search is for "example and lyrics", in that case, the second option above has a better chance of appearing in the listing.

Then it doesn't matter?

It really shouldn't matter...each page should be optimized though if you look at it that way. Each pages keywords may be slightly different than the index because each page obviously does not contain 100% of the same content. The description and title of each page will be different as well, and the actually text of the page is different. Submitting the index is usually all you have to do, spiders find the rest if you link correctly within your site.

In my experience it doesn't matter. I think the only advantage the root has is that it will be more likely (but not necessarily) be linked to by other sites therefore having a higher PR.
