Static IP vs Virtual Host

I have noticed that some bots get a 404 and leave my site while the googlebot 2.1 seemed to get around this and index through fine. It did report a 404 on the index page in the raw logs. My site is currently virtually hosted, when I ran an SEO tool, it told me that it was unable to index the site because it was virtually hosted. Should I pay to have a static IP address?

Thanks

the site I'm involved with is on shared hosting, always has been, and is coming up on two years at the same host. I can't think of any down sides our arrangment has presented to anyone's robot.

I would guess that there must be some other problem because many people have virtually hosted domains that index just fine. Sure a static ip is good and it really should not cost that much extra, but it sounds to me like it may not be the solution to your problem.

When you use a virtual host you will most likely be sharing an IP with other websites on the same server box. If one of those websites has a bad reputation with search engines, it might pass on to you.

Yeah, reminds me of the story of a guy who got his business banned from eBay because someone who stayed at the same temporary business residence before him defrauded a bunch of ebay users..
