Hi All,

I have just built a web-site which is a paid members only site. The site has basically 'mixed' together some of the best elements of two or three 'biggies' with a bit of a twist in there. I know that there is nothing else on the net which has done this before (I guess we all say that lol!). However, I'm relatively new at this and need a few queries answered.
I've learnt a lot just reading through here but I'm completely clueless as to what a lot of things mean in terms of SEO so if I sound a bit 'green' please forgive me!
Last year I built a site myself just to learn how to do it. I basically had a bit of a hair disaster and when I went on the net to remedy there was hardly any info out there. So I built a basic info site on this topic myself. I submitted it to the SE's and put a got a few reciprocal links in and within a few months it was No 4 + 5 on Google.com for basic search terms ie ' ****** **** advice' and No1 on Google UK for the same (it drops slightly lower depending on the order of the search term). Now I know that this is a very targeted audience for the site, a 'niche' site as I've so often heard here, but I didn't have to do much in the way of SEO to get it there.

I'm a bit stumped by all I've read for the new site so here goes :-

1) Would linking to my other Google ranked site help greatly or not?

2) Meta-tags are they still relevant or not?

3) Keywords, call me dumb but WHAT exactly are they and where do they go? Is it just the wording on pages or do they go in the code?

4) Because I draw 3 very different things together in one site and there are already some very BIG sites out there which only concentrate on 1 of them (when I type in the 3 search words in any order most sites that come up only concentrate on 1 of the search words)....I went to Overture and the search term has come up 0 times, Even with just 2 of the words. How do I overcome this? Do I concentrate on just promoting 1 or 2 of the areas on site. They are all mutually dependent on each other and the members will benefit from them all being there, so I can't dismantle and put up 3 different sites solely devoted to one aspect. (I hope all that made sense lol ).

5)The home page has a small 30k flash banner at the top will this affect anything?

6) The links on the home page only go to various 'preview' areas, not into the body of the site at all. Will this make a difference too?

That's enough to be going on with just now, I look forward to your replies....and I dare say I will be back with more!

Thanks!

Link to it if it's on-topic and relevant.

2) Meta-tags are they still relevant or not?

Not in google. Possibly in others. Don't overdo them.

3) Keywords, call me dumb but WHAT exactly are they and where do they go? Is it just the wording on pages or do they go in the code?

Wording on the pages, and in page titles and headings. Don't overdo it, just bear them in mind when you're writing content. Your site is about three key areas - make sure you produce a lot of content relating to them.

Possibly not many people will be searching on the three-word phrase you're targetting. Who are you marketing to? I'd give it some more thought.

5)The home page has a small 30k flash banner at the top will this affect anything?

30k is not too bad. Personally I think all that kind of fluff looks cheap and tacky. But that's subjective....

6) The links on the home page only go to various 'preview' areas, not into the body of the site at all. Will this make a difference too?

Yes. Deep-link right to content from the homepage, not to a preview area.

.... dare say I will be back with more....
