Anyone who has a link to reliable statistics? or maybe someone knows it?

I found these, but they are not very specific regarding how many use 1,2,3,4 keywords etc.

"Results show that 45% of searchers use a combination of keywords (key phrases), 28% use one keyword, 18% search by a pre-defined option (such as browsing through a directory category) and 9% search by typing in a question (NPD)."
excerpt [webpromotionguru.com/articles/f314.shtml]

another one:
"1) Very few search queries are alike. For every 50 clicks a URL receives, 90 percent of the search queries are different.
2) 75% of all search queries are three terms or longer."
excerpt[traffick.com/story/searchengines/020204_positiontech.asp]

Personally I start with 2-3 keywords, and starts adding positives and negatives until I find what I'm looking for (if i'm looking for specific information). Sometimes ending up with 5-6 keywords. But I guess that not all searchers are aware of how to utilize SE's effectivly.

I definitely agree. Let me give an example.

Mount Widget is a big mountain that dominates its area. So there is a Mount Widget Chamber of Commerce, a Mount Widget Veterinary Hospital, a Mount Widget Chiropractors, you get the idea. Also lots of people hike up Mount Widget, and my site has a page on hiking Mount Widget.

If the searcher searches for "hiking Mount Widget" my page is usually the first. But most people seem to find that page by searching for "Mount Widget" and going through three or four pages of irrelevant (for them) stuff before finding my page on page 4 (roughly) of the SERPs.

It depends on the target group the language...

Japanese seem to preferr one keyword.

The more specific the user knows what he is looking for the more specific the querry gets.

You have to analyse the keywords for each market to know the answer to that question.
