Change at MSN Search

beta version rolled out onto main site

MSN today just rolled out the beta version of their search that has been at [beta.search.msn.com...] . Not only does it have a different look, but they present the results a little differently. The first sites listed are called Featured Sites, and based on the URL they look like ads. They are presenting these sites as the first sites in the search results. Then come the Web Directory Sites, which are the same as before, but the numbering of those continues where the numbering of the Featured Sites left off, so the net result is that directory results are pushed lower than they were before. And a third new thing is that especially for more general searches, MSN presents additional topics that might more specifically define what you are looking for, which if you click on present new search results. They also have a news search, an EShop search, and a Yellow Pages search as other options you can click on after you run a search from the main page.

Do you know where the "Featured Sites" results are coming from? If they are ads, do people advertise with MSN or are they using GoTo or another PPC engine?

I did a search on "hosting" and low and behold, up comes network solutions, and several msn sites in the featured sites area.

If they are ads, they are only paying for the TOP KW and leaving the rest in a SET alone.

I just searched on 20-25 of my kw's and the links at top all appear to be going straight into the directory to me. You guys seeing anything different under yours?

I have not been following MSN for some time. Who feeds their web directory listings? Who ever is feeding them will be hearing from me. They have our first listings with an incorrect name. I wouldn't mind, but we are a internationally known orginization. *shaking head*

From search.msn.com help pages I found the following info.

Featured Sites are direct links to Web sites from MSN.com and MSN sponsors. In some cases, Microsoft accepts payment in exchange for these listings.

Web Directory results are from LookSmart.
Top 10 most popular are from DirectHit.
Web Pages are anything else that matches.

If there is a RealName Internet Keyword it appears at the top of featured sites section.

Been running some searches at MSN Search today, and I keep getting a Page cannot be displayed error, with text on the page saying that it's because the server is too busy. It's happened a decent amount. If I hit refresh one or more times, I can get through eventually.

We have a featured site listed in MSN, that we are NOT paying for in any way. The URL comes up on a variety of searches, and the incremental traffic increase because of the listing has been very good.

I know I am late to jump into this discussion, but my site comes up in the top spot for just about any relevant key word search. This happened about 10 days after I paid to submit to Looksmart. It has remained there ever since.

Here's a strange one. One of my clients has a site which gets lumped into adult searches even though it is not an adult site at all. When doing a search at the "New MSN" you get a choice of seeing the results from an adult index (Night surf or something like that) or viewing MSN's results. When viewing MSN's results it returns exactly 1 web directory result with no web page results. Nice job of filtering MSN!
