hello there..
i am new and im not so, you can still call me a newbie on this website but,
i have got my webpages results perfect i mean i can still do alot to "tweak" my site but its great as it is.
now i have come to the conclusion "FREE" search engine submission is not going to increase my traffic, unless i pay for submission to decent "SE's" for example INKTOMI is now part of Yahoo.

i live in newzealand so im trying to get local results to my site and yahoo and msn are up there in the search engines, we have instead of msn what we call xtramsn now its very similar to msn but the search results are run by... looksmart. they are honestly charging way too much for what they are worth. i am just after these few answers..

1. wich is the best paid SE submission?
2. if i submit to inktomi will i get into xtramsn?
3. is inktomi really worth it,
4. Is the Yahoo Directory still a "big hit" on search results?
5. is optimiseation for inktomi similar to google? (if not im screwed)
can anyone help me out here.. cheers.

>1. wich is the best paid SE submission?

None of them. Free crawled results should work for you.

>2. if i submit to inktomi will i get into xtramsn?
Yes (maybe), but I wouldn't advise paying for an Inktomi submission....use the free crawl mechanism.

>3. is inktomi really worth it,
Inktomi is critical, but you don't need to pay.

>4. Is the Yahoo Directory still a "big hit" on search results?
Not for me and I have numerous sites that still rank top for the free submissions made years ago (before Yahoo started charging). I certainly wouldn't be paying for the traffic driven today.

>5. is optimiseation for inktomi similar to google? (if not im screwed)

This one is tricky. Prior to November '03 I would have said that if you rank high by optimizing for Google you would automatically rank high for Inktomi.

Today, if you had done that you will rank high for Inktomi (and all other engines), but you may not rank high for Google.

IMHO Google is in a state of flux and should be put on the back burner until it settles. I've seen the relevant sites dropped, come back and then dropped again, all within 30 days.....it is impossible to make changes based upon what Google is currently doing. I suggest doing nothing, if Google doesn't fix its problems it will eventually lose its users (may take a while). If it does it should come more back into line with other SE's.

so really should i just leave it and forget as im already listed in all of these search engines?

and just worry about optimizing for these engines?

agree how can you optimise for G when G doesn't seem to know what it's doing

Inktomi submission....use the free crawl mechanism

Where is this?

Will that crawl my entire site or, like the usual Inktomi submission, just the page I submit?

Hi Tigger!

With reference to the free inktomi submission.

They state:

"Your site must be in English"

Do they filter no English pages?

It will crawl you entire site as far as we have experienced.

well in theory they should crawl the whole site, but I'm no Ink guru so perhaps I'm the wrong person to ask that

If Ink thinks your site is important enough it will eventually index it all, given good navigation. It can take awhile for a new site but they eventually get to you.

Thanks for your help!

Another question though, does Inktomi craw dynamic sites?

yes it does crawl dynamic sites but not as good as G. you will go crazy trying to figure out why certain pages have been crawled entirely while others left out. However static pages have got crawled thoroughly.

I'd almost forgotten about this thread! About a month ago I setup some URL rewriting on my site so that my dynamic pages are given static-like URLs. I've noticed in my logs a lot of activity from the Inktomi bot the past few days, so I think this has done the job! I think it obviously has a preference for static content.

I must disagree with not submitting to Inktomi. I think it is great when Inktomi craws your site for free, but I think it is best to pay Inktomi to craw 5 or 6 of the main pages. Depending on the field your website is in, the payoff could be very high since Inktomi supplies other search engines.

I'm not saying to pay Inktomi to craw your whole website, but to craw the 5 or 6 best pages you have could be a very good investment, and its for the entire year.
