What's the view like at the top?

Or how to gauge the responce of being on page 1?

How do I guage the number of hits to expect after I get the site to page one? How do I check how often keywords and phrases are used?

The main reason I need know is as an argument for why spamming isn't needed. (Please don't preach me on the evils of spamming. I'm already convinced of it, but my client isn't.)

Too broad of a query. On page one for what?

My main site is in a rather small niche. With page one SERPs across multiple search terms I average a couple of thousand visitors a month. This is consistant with the Overture search term suggestion tool.

On the other hand, if I were on page one for a high traffic term, I might see several million visitors a month.

You could start with the tool I mention above, which can be found at h*tp://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

I wanted it broad because I wanted general answers on how to estimate hits from being on page one for various key word searches.
...small niche...multiple search terms...couple of thousand visitors a month...high traffic term...several million visitors....
I understand that, and the tool you suggested, the Overture search term suggestion tool, is very helpful, but how do I interpret the results and make a guessedamit as to how many visitors to expect. I realize this isn't an exact science, but I need to make the best projection I can. Remember, I am trying to prevent a client from sending out millions of emails--with only a small chance they aren't spam--by ofering an alternitive. Even a 0.1% return on the emails would mean thousands of hits, and if the list is even pseudo-opt-in, tens of thousands of hits are possible.

Make a guess on how many people are looking for your keywords (with Overture or Google Adwords). Beeing in the top ten means to get at least 10 % of that (usually people click to at least one of the ten top entries). So if the text of your SERP matches what people are looking for you can expect something like the number you calculate like that. As you mentioned there is not way to get an exact number.
