As a beginner, I am wondering about the best place to get helpful information about starting Search Engine Optimization for the my website. I did some work before but feel I need to improve my knowledge base in this area.
I strongly beleive this is the right place, but I cannot find any related topics-forums where it will be explained step by step.

Many thanks in advance!

Welcome to webmasterworld.

to be honest, there is no such thing as a step by step approach, all i can say is that the more you keep your head down and try out the more you will learn. This is an excellant resource from many angles, though SEO/SEM is the prime concern, design, web-programming, hosting and many other things are covered.

Since your posting in this forum, then its SE's as a whole that you wish to know about.

A general one site fits all approach.

Theme content
Simple Navigation
Very related on-topic linking

Would be the general three area's of strength. Of course there are many, but staying within generalised SE promotion, then this is a worthwhile approach to site considerations.

Regarding Keywords - research, know what you want!

PPC / PFI systems, worth learning, so that you can pick up todays favorite top listing SERPs in many engine's via regional (country) or international, demographics, etc.

Hopefully these underline some basic starting points, though heading into the New to Web Development Forum [webmasterworld.com] would be a very positive move - i constantly find threads in there that are so instructive.

I think the best place to start is to find out which Search Engine you want to start focusing on first. Obviously Google is the one everybody wants to crack so maybe you could start with them? Learn how it works and the rest will follow. There are a few forums here dedicated to the major engines so maybe you could have a wonder over there? Top tip - keep an eye on Microsofts moves closely.

Sign up to a few marketing research newsletters to keep updated with the Search Engine world.

Lastly, try visiting searchengineworld. I'm not allowed to give the link (I think) but it has a dot com after it ;)

Happy learning,
Terry
