how do you do it

I know that AltaVista has a submit URL thingy, but do they actually index any of the sites that are submitted that way?

I have a few sites that have been indexed in google, ink, and all the web, but none have been picked up by AltaVista. Is there a way to get sites into AltaVista without paying?

Yeah, I know I am cheap, but I am just starting and trying to feed my family. Boo Hoo, sob sob.

Anyway, any direction would be appreciated.

You need external web sites linking to your site to get on fast. The best sites are those that are updated daily which the crawlers visit daily.

Without links you could be waiting up to a few months on some SE's, with other people linking to your site you could be on the SE's in days (sometimes hours).

I don't bother submitting to any SE anymore. I just link to it from all the web sites I control and check back later that day or the next couple of days. It's rare I have to wait longer than a day anymore.

Yes, you need some good inbound links and then sit back and wait. It can take awhile to get in and then awhile more to rank well.

Alright Simon & Brad,

Riddle me this, do you take down your links once the site is seen by the other SEs or do you leave them.

If you leave them, don't you worry about cross linking penalties?

If you DON'T leave the links up, when do you take them down?

Nothing to take down. Get links from ODP and the other major directories, niche directories etc. AV will eventually pick you up. I would avoid excessive crosslinking of your own sites because Google does not like it (and we must obey).

AV uses a simple(r) link pop factor in it's algo so you want those links to stay in place.

Personally I either leave the link on there or relocate it to another less important page but one where it will still counts as a link towards the other site.

The reason I leave them on there is most of my sites are PR5 so a new site should also reach PR5 quite fast.

actually, link to pages that are on your same topic. Not necessarilly competators, but same subject matter. Try to get reciprocal links, and leave them up.

You may actually be suprised how much traffic you get from links, and how fast that traffic disappears when your link gets killed because you dropped your link to their site.

You don't want your site to be a dead end, give people a reason to come back even if it is to find that link you have to that other cool site.

You should really worry about getting links to your site that people might stumble on. Think of a robot as a really fast human with no attention span. If a slow human can find links to your site without searching, so can the robot.
