Would this be considered a no no

Is this keyword stuffing or a no no for another reason

I've been evaluating a site in my market that ranks number one for almost every keyword related to our industry.

One thing I notice about their site is at the top, the have many many keywords & phrases on each page (approximately 50 - 60) all in a dark charcoal on a black background in the format of keyword1/phrase1/keyword2/keyword3/phrase2 and on and on. Each set of keywords is relevant to each page. They also repeat many of them using the same technique at the bottom of the page.

Is this improper and thus it's just a matter of time? or are they considered ok by the various search engine, most importantly google? Is that on the basis that because it's relevant and even though almost impossible to read, it's not hidden if the text color and background color don't quite match?

Second question, a couple of my competitors rank higher than I do for certain two word phrases. For one of my competitors, I can't even find that phase on the page, nor is it in googles cache. I looked at the source code from three different computers/locations and the code accurately represents the page. What gives with that?

Google says not to do that (stuffing) but it obviously works.

I've seen sites at #1 for three years running using these techniques.

I personally don't do it because it looks crappy.

I can't even find that phase on the page,..

Inbound links.

Hi Ledfish,

You could use the same methods they do but you need to think to yourself that it is against the guidelines so could you afford to have your site suddenly banned one day because of it. If you can afford to take that chance then why not.

So it is keyword stuffing even if it is relevant?

Robino, Yes it does usually look pretty crappy, but I must say that it doesn't look all that horrible the way they have designed it.

Simonuk, no I'm not interested in flipping the coin. Whe are in the ecommerce area and getting banned would be a lethal blow. I would rather figure out an acceptable method to help us get towards the top.

This site I speak of appears not to be doing just one thing to get to that top position, it would appear that they have a well thought out SEO plan and thus are doing alot of things to get their site to #1 and if I can figure those all out, do the acceptable ones, then I can climb in the rankings and if THEY should get banned, I would benefit. Right now, just getting in the top 5 would make me happy.
