Hi,
I recently opened up a new website mainly for retailing and selling products online. I was wondering about some general things I should do so that I could get more hits and some pointers to get people to buy more. About 80% of my earnings come from ebay and I prefer more purchases through the web. Im relatively new to all the terms you use (all I really know is SEO = search engine optimization) =)). I been reading through several articles and it has given me a lot of information. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi here dawggy,
Welcome to Webmaster World.

You have come to the right place to ask these questions.

A great place to start is with this post Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone [webmasterworld.com].

A lot of flux going on now with the serps in Google, but the advice in that post is right on the mark.

Keep coming back and reading and asking questions.

It's really good community here.

besides learning about search also read up on web metrics. Use search to get the users to your site but then learn about web metrics to convert them to sales.

Thanks for the help. Also, since I run basically an e-commerce site that sells products online, what other pointers are there?

Sorry, lemme make that clear. What pointers for SALES should I include? Such as, using denominations of $0.99 instead of $1.00, put retail price and our price in red, etc etc.

it might be a good idea for you to buy an intro to marketing book. I'd suggest refreshing yourself on all he basics of marketing and tips/tricks.

Your local bank should have books and leaflets they can give you as well. When I started up my business and I went to them for a loan they gave me for free a ton of nice quality, hard back books on marketing, managing etc.

I like it when it's free ;)

Simon.

Good idea. But if anyone has any of those "10 steps in good marketing basics" or anything similar, that would be great! Im looking more generally at first and working my way higher. Books can be very informative, yet, be real different when applied in real life from its theories. I prefer advice through experience of other people since word of mouth for me is much stronger than some books. Keep the info flowing! Helping me out a lot here!
