Say the key phrase I need to target is "new widgets"

Say new-widgets.com and newwidgets.com (or variations) are unavailable are unavailable.

Would the next best strategy be to go for, say "new-widgetshop", that is, keeping the full key phrase as a string within the domain name?

Any thoughts?

You might want to consider a domain variation such as .biz or .info (e.g. new-widgets.biz, new-widgets.info).

Looks more professional than an extended version such as new-widgetshop.com and should give you the same benefit.

Since you mention widgets, Im going to assume your trying to make money from your site from your users.

If you plan on handling sales through your site I would be careful in using .info, .biz, .us type domains as study after study Ive read indicate that users have less confidence in an e-commerce site that is not a .com or .net.

I would recommend a professional sounding name, something catchy (ie:amazon.com), or one that relates to the products/services your offering. However, no domain name can take the place of a well thought out, usable site, with fresh relative content.

What do you think about new-widgets-anyword.com?
For example "online" etc. Will it get better site position in Google for the "new-widgets" keyword?

I've read where it's not taken into account at all by SE's anymore. What the SE's do take into account is the directory pointing to the indexed page.
For example:
anythingatall.com/widgets/
is weighted just the same as
widgets.com/widgets/
as far as SE's are concerned.
As for remembering the url, that's a different story.

We've had multiple discussions about keyworded multi-hyphenated domain names with a lot of mixed feelings and thoughts about it - how memorable and how trustworthy the look, among other factors.

Plus, there isn't any one factor that guarantees anything as far as rankings go, algorithms are too fluid over the course of time.

Go for branding and utilize interior navigation, on-page relevancy targeting, and other scoring factors - with caution and moderation. It's a lot more stable long term and a lot safer ranking-wise for the long haul.

Say new-widgets.com and newwidgets.com (or variations) are unavailable are unavailable.

First thing newwidgets.com will not help you that much as new-widgets.com.

You can go for new-widgets-(any word that suits your business).com , you can alway find such a word.

I have seen that newwidgets.com comes nowhere in SERPs for allinurl, but new-widgets.com does help, but a very small factor though.

Best of luck

I totally agree with Jmartin.

I think that new-widgets-anyword.com is a horrible name. A name like amazon.com or yahoo.com is so much better and memorable.

Keywords in URL are not so important that you should take a bad name for your business in particular if you want to get repeat sales, foundation of healty businesses.
