Search Engine Ranking advice needed for a newbie

I've had a site up for a couple of months now and the question is how do I get my site higher up in the search results?

Dazzy, word has it that Yahoo will be making a switch sometime soon with Inktomi as a highly logical possibility; and a bit of decent MSN traffic is nothing to sneeze at either. Do you want just Google *only*, or do you want to take a little more diverse approach than that?
