Nick W - Thanks for all the css/seo suggestions.
>> and <H1> tags, for example, to improve page rank
One misconception here; PageRank(tm) is not the same as how high in the results you will be found. Changing content on your own pages will not give those pages a higher PageRank as this is determined only by looking at links from other pages to your pages - but it might give them a higher placement in the results pages anyway.

At the moment it seems like the most important thing is the anchor text of your incoming links. Some even say things like "it doesn't matter at all what you put on your pages", but personally i think this is too extreme. It all depends on the competition.
I'd say that title is more important than body, and <h>'s too, in decreasing order - i'm not sure if body is more important than say, <h4> or <h6> it all depends on so much.
Imho, the "placing content higher in the code" is speculative. Although i'm a bit sceptic, i need to say that others might have the opposite opinion, and i haven't tested this.

I have keywords in my header and navigation as well as <body>. Does <body> content carry more seo 'weight'?
I've heard from people who do a lot more analysis than I do, that today's search engines can identify your page template elements -- and words used only in those repeated elements don't seem to get as much of a boost as the page's specific body content.
While I haven't done a lot of research on this, I have noticed that pages often do unexpectedly well for their targeted keywords when the page doesn't use the website's common header/nav/footer elements.
For the perspective of a search engine, this would make plenty of sense. After all, they want to return the most relevant PAGES, not the most relevant SITES. So tuning down the importance of page template elements would help achieve that goal -- the most relevant page content would tend to come to the fore.

i guess positioning of content is up for debate. my impression from other WW posts is that positioning can have some influence on search results placement:
