Some people say that i should optimize my site with the keywords in the title, description and body of each page and that i should link directories that have keywords, and some people say that i should have alot of sites linking to my site using the keywords.
please can someone give me some guideline as i've spent sooooo much time reading and trying out so many methods but nothing seems to work.

You have read what needs to be done and, as far as I can tell, interpeted it correctly. That is the easy part :)
Now all you have to do is implement it. Alas, not quite so easy ...
Otimizing a web site is hard work, if there was an easy way everyone would be #1.
i've read so many articles and forums over here. i spend over a month reading but i cannot seem to find a solution to get my site highly ranked.
Hello Laura. If you've spent a month reading but cannot find a solution, it may be time to hire a professional. If hiring a professional is not in the budget, you might want to read a little more and do some experimentation. Everything you'll need is right here in the various forums.
You might want to try visiting each of the forums libraries as that is where you'll find the really good stuff that has been archived based on thread quality.

If you've inserted the required elements into your pages, and have gone out and searched for the appropriate inbound links and you've submitted, then wait. Keep checking your logs for spider visits, keep checking for your rank on each search engine after the visit, keep checking your web stats for refering pages and search engine phrases, and wait.
You may find that people are landing on your page using a completely different keyword or phrase.

Life is not an equation with one variable, otherwise everyone would be #1. Take your time make a complete stratergy.
1)Decide your keywords (take help from wordtracker.com and your competitors)
2)design your pages sensibly, applying all that you have learned
3)Start getting good partners(toughest part), try using "keyword+add+url", this is the best way for a new site.
Rest of the things are in your head, just apply them, good luck.

If you play the PPC game well, it won't cost you a fortune, and you will at least generate some traffic while you work on the site.
Also, check out the sites that you are competing with. What do their pages do to rank so well in that keyword? Maybe there is something you could learn from that.
it looks like you've done your 'on-page optimizations', but as you mention in your first post, you need to have lots of other sites on the Internet linked to you (yes, through the keywords you want to rank for is best, but in general, you still want regular links)
the best way to go about this is to set up a page on your site for reciprocal links, and start emailing webmasters in your field to exchange links with them.
this is the slow boring part. which makes sense that it's also among the most important ;)
