Is this considered a problem result?

I have a site that sells a handful of major product lines. In my industry it is typical for these products to go by different names including variations of the same name all meaning essentially the same thing.

My question is this. Is it considered spamming if I optimize one page for each of these names or rather search terms with essentially the same content then link them all together by putting at the bottom of each page a set of links with the title "Other Popular Terms For Widgets" and list each of terms?

I have found one of my competitors doing this very thing except that the links are hidden in a blue table and very very far down on each of the pages. He is obviously trying to hide them from visitors.

My idea is not to hide these links but rather to "legitimize" their use by identifying them as alternative terms for the same product.

optimize one page for each of these names...then link them all together

Yeah I think that's legit. Just be sure you change the structure and content enough so that you don't have duplicate pages.
