Interesting question silverbytes. How about we list those Search Engines that are of importance that still have a Free Submission page. I'll start with...

Add your URL to Google [google.com]

Major SE should be submitted by hand.
But those multi-submission uses to include popular SE like google. If they get a multisubmission of an already submitted site, I don't think they like it...
So should we avoid it?

It isn't necessary. Instead, work on getting links to your site.

Avoid submitting multiple times, but you won't be penalized if you do.

From Google's Facts & Fiction [google.com] page:

Fiction: A website will be removed from Google's index if it's 'over-submitted'.

Fact:
We do not require submission nor do we penalize sites for 'over-submission'. You are free to submit as often as you wish. However, given the nature of our inclusion process, your time is better spent improving the content and links of your site.

May I suggest that those who have not read Google's excellent Information for Webmasters [google.com] do so ASAP.

May I also suggest in this case, and in many others, to not believe everything you read.

Getting links from sites already in the major search engine indexes is the key.

ODP says other thing about not penalizing...
And Google takes sites from ODP directory as far as I know..

Just behind the submit button in "add site" the final warning is and sorry for the spanish

"Políticas de envío de sitios
Nos preocupamos por la calidad del directorio. Tenga en cuenta que los envíos abusivos provocarán la eliminación de todos los enlaces relacionados con el abusador."

Something like: "Abusive submissions will result in deletion of all links realted to abuser."

And the same pages says: "No está permitido disfrazar un envío y enviar la misma dirección URL varias veces."

Is not allowed to send the same url many times.

So if multi submissions do that, they are violating ODP politics and your site really can be removed from the directory.

Am I wrong?
