Newbie - Information on promoting a new site

I have recently started a new not-for-profit charity (volunteer) management website. I apologize for this question but can someone direct me to any communications that have occurred on what a newbie can read or where to visit to better understand and implement a search engine optimization solution that can increase the level of traffic to our site.
