Does special characters in title tag earn a ban?

stars, dots, arrows, etc in title tag - any penalty?

I want to use stars, arrows and some other special HTML characters in my title tag.

Will this earn me a ban or penalty?

Any history of that ever happening?

My site has been #1 on Google for years with an aterisk in front of the title. My predecessor did it in the way early days of SEO and I've always worried about it, but it hasn't seemed to hurt. And it does make the listing stand out on the Search Engine Results page.
