Can anyone tell me exactly what a 301 redirect accomplishes? I know it tells the search engines that the site has permanently been moved to a new domain, but what else does it do? Will the search engines give my old site's link reputation to my new site. Any more info about 301 redirection would be awesome. Thanks.

You know the main reason - to tell the SE spiders where to find you. What it won't achieve is to "move" your backlinks. You will need to notify them yourself and not all of them will bother. I lost over 90% of my backlinks for one site where I completely forgot about that aspect.
