Perfect Ranking in Theory

Suppose I have A LOT of time...

Suppose this:

I have written a 300 page book, about widgets, of course, with 50 short chapters, which I want to sell to widget lovers, from my main site, widgets.com.

I have no life, so I spend my time creating 50 websites such as this: widget_topic_1.com, widget_topic_2.com, etc., which more or less use the content from the book, so that no two sites are the same, and each site can be considered useful on its own.

Each small site links to my main site, and the topic preceding and following.

Since I have yet more free time, I try and get all the small sites individually listed at DMOZ and some relevant incoming links from related sites where possible, though this may be a tall task even for someone with my amount of free time.

My question is: will this work to get my main site reliably into the top 10, even in a more competitive keyword area (say 1-3 million searches), and will it incur any penalties, and if so, how can they be(if they can be) avoided?

And a follow up question: suppose I have three products, and three sites: widget1.com, widget2.com and widget3.com. Can I link to all three from each small site without fear of penalty? What if widget2.com and widget3.com aren't related to widget1.com?

I don't actually have the time or patience to do anything of the sort, but I have been wondering- would this work?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I wouldn't choose this option, although you may be able to make it work. Instead I would choose one of the two following options, in order of my preference:

1) Keep ALL of the content on the same domain name, and instead of creating 50 different websites, create 50 different directories, each targeting their respective category/keyword/etc. Use this content to build the strength of the homepage and root directory, and use this homepage and root directory strength to get the inner pages ranking.

2) Create 50 sub-domains and create a mini-network of sub-domains around the root domain.

suppose I have three products, and three sites: widget1.com, widget2.com and widget3.com. Can I link to all three from each small site without fear of penalty? What if widget2.com and widget3.com aren't related to widget1.com?

It can be done, and I have seen it done, without penalty. That said, I typically don't do it, as there are plenty of other websites out there to gain links from, without any risk associated with them, even the smallest risk.

Dmoz editors are always on the lookout for a single block of content spread across several domains - this has no better a chance of being listed than if you had kept all the content in one domain and submitted the deeplinks.
