Hi all

I already have a domain widgetsrightnow.com and on a whim, I just registered widget-depot.com because it was available. I have absolutely no idea what to do with it. I'm new to all this so I was looking for some ideas...

I wanted to make a gateway page on it but I've heard that it may not be good for SEO...

Any thoughts, recommendations?

You can make it look a bit different than your exisiting site, then try to collect inbound links to it, and that way try to get top ranking for a few phrases, and if they wanted to see a product etc, you could send them to your "real" site.

Think of this also as a chance to experiment. Right now, I have a similar situation with three domains that fell into my lap. I'm focusing on the one domain right now with a largely reviews and information approach with product information embedded in the articles, but plan to try a few experiments on the others, such as centering one site around a blog about the topic and perhaps using a direct sales approach on the third. I figure it will be a great learning experience at the least comparing how the search engines and the visitors respond to different approaches.

mylungsarempty, since we try not to post the actual keywords (Due to TOS), we've used widgets as a replacement system for the actual keyword, and it's worked well so far.

Thanks for clearing that up for me... i think i'll go read the TOS: i've kindof made a habit of just skipping over those on the internet, along with lisence agreements and what not... i'm sure y'all understand. This is a great site though, by the way.

JeffB, I'm not sure about a direct sales approach (i assume you mean something like a sales letter a la Corey Rudl), since I have many different models of widget.

The blog sounds interesting, post your findings with that. I would love to hear how you did.

I think I may experiment with it and see if I can collect inbound links like Jeffb and lazerzubb (I keep wanting to type lazerbubb :) suggested.

What kind of impact will that have on my business if I screw up and get penalized on that domain for some weird reason?

Oh and on the widget thing... we used it as a universal analogy for any kind of product back when I was in Business school. Easier for profs to give examples that way instead of thinking up, "say they make, um, ah, apples... no, oranges.." :)

Dabble with it!

If it is product related, set up a site and with a little SEO, you will benefit from it.
