Do numbers in a url cause any problems or difficulties ie
www.widgets123.com
www.widgets-911.com

Not exactly sure what you mean by "difficulties":

1. Are they valid URLs? Yes.
2. Will they match keywords? widgets123 will only match widgets123, whereas widgets-911 will match both widgets and 911.

I have numbers in one of my domains but no hyphen because I opted for a brandable domain, not a keyword-loaded domain. It ranks well, so there are no "issues" whatever you mean by that term.

Numbers in a URL pose no threat to ranking. Having numbers in a URL can even aid listings because the numbers list before the letters of the alphabet.

The key with a domain name is to have it memorable and short if possible. Beyond that it does not matter to an extreme level.
