How many characters?

I'm sure this has been answered before but I couldn't find anything on site search.

What is an acceptable number of characters to be contained in the keyword meta tag?

I'm not too certain that it applies in this day and age. If you are using the keywords tag, I recommend no more than 10, 15 or 20 words depending on the page content. Make it brief and to the point. If they are not on the page, they don't belong in the tag.

I typically pull them from the page title, description and then first one or two paragraphs on the page.

I've seen many quoted numbers over the years. Since the tag is almost irrelevant, I wouldn't worry about it.
