Enormous rise in Site Visits past couple of days?

from 1200 daily average to 9000 - why?

I have experenced an enormous rise is visits over the past two days, and today - going from 1200 odd visitors a day to over 6000 two days ago, 9000 yesterday, and today already up to 2500 - where can i find evidence of what has caused this? i have access to the last 1000 lines of log - wont help much, as well as a fairly good stats package...

this is for a self help charity site - what could i be looking at? - an shout out on CNN.com or something! :)

what really odd, is another site - totally unrelated, has also had its figures for yesterday over 4 times normal amount - nither site has seen anomilies nearly this big in their history...

how do i best get to the bottom - or is it googlebot doing an enormous deep crawl :)

any thoughts would be most interesting,

i did track it down :) - got a message from a visitor - and they happened to mention that they got there from a site i had never heard of - so i went to check it out, and there on the homepage is a link to an internal page of images on my site...php site - said that it had had 16,000 clicks :)

doesnt explain the other site though - more detective work!

a pleasent end to the month a thought :)

were they quality visitors, and did it increase the conversion rate (sales, sign-ups, leads, newsletter)
