I understand what a "themed" search engine, such as Excite is, but I don't know what a "meta" search engine, such as Mamma.com is.

Can anyone tell me the difference?

A meta engine simply takes results from the major engines.

www.dogpile.com
www.zworks.com

are 2 good examples

[Added]
mamma.com adds some lesser stuff from
Kanoodle, Rocketlinks, 7search, etc

Since they are drawing their info from some other engine, there's usually nowhere to submit.

They can still be fairly potent and an added kicker for a good listing elsewhere.

2 I like to use myself: ixquick.com and metaeureka.com

2 that provide some traffic for me: dogpile and mamma

Thanks! I guess I should have figured that out on my own, but I am glad you clairified it for me.

Does anyone know what the "biggest" meta search engine is that is worth ensuring you get into?

Agreed. Last year I helped a company do a quick "in and out" marketing job. No time to get in directories and build great SE rank. But we bought a bunch of GoTo words and the traffic was very fruitful from many surprising directions.

#1 meta search engine is MetaCrawler (go2net.com). (they own dogpile).
