Since I've been on WW I see a lot of people talking about promoting specific keywords. I am wondering what is the spread of Keywords / Phrases that people get as referers? ie how many distinct Keywords / Phrases appear in the search engine referer log for a given day?

Do you only have a few keywords / phrases that will find your site or do people find your site under many different keywords and phrases?

The largest site I work with is about 1,200 pages. In a week (sorry, I don't run a daily analysis) we see around 4,000 different search terms - mostly two and three word phrases.

But it wasn't always this way. There's a lot of work involved in finding and boosting search terms that show up only occasionally in the logs, watching the site search engine to learn what topics people are looking for that the site isn't currently covering, and in general leveraging every opportunity we can find.

This site, by the way, does no PPC at all.

What tool do you use to do this? I'm running an old version of Webtrends and it seems to only do 200 on the report.

I use FastStats Analyzer and Windows Grep for detailed work. FastStats lets me set filters so I can dig down deep by excluding this or that. That way I can see the deeper patterns.

I can also change the cutoff number (it truncates at 100 by default).

Which version of Faststats do you use? It looks like a good product going to do some more research and try the trial.

Thanks,
