How does one find out whether his/her website has been banned or not.

I see Scooter, GoogleBot in my recent logs (last 3 days) but no searches for the KW in the site......:(( is this a BAD sign?

I am kind of new in the field and learning from Trial and Error.....

Please help.

Check whether Google has any of your pages in its index by using this command:
allinurl:www.yoursite.com site:www.yoursite.com

Then, check your pagerank using the Google toolbar. It's the green/white strip on the toolbar that tells you your rank. Move the mouse over it and you'll see a number. If you don't have the toolbar you can easily download it from here:
[toolbar.google.com...]

If your bar is white you MIGHT be penalised but not necessarily. It if is grey, Google probably doesn't have any of your pages in its cache. If there's some green on it, you are definitely in the index. To get into Google you need other sites that link to you. But luckily you have found Googlebot in your logs. This means either that Google has found your site and will include pages in its index during the next update. Or, you already have pages in and Google is just checking for new and updated pages. :)

Hi Susanne,

The problem is beyond the rank.

What happened is, after GoogleBot and Scooter came to my site for the second time, I modified my robots.txt and by mistake, the access rights of the file got modified.

GoogleBot and Scooter, both got error 401(restricted area) while accessing robots.txt and went back. :(

does this mean they will NEVER come back?

I changed the rights back so that everyone can access the file.

Thank You,
~N

No, I think they'll be back.
