I know its wise to submit your site to Google, etc. But which secondary search engines are a must? Do any of these have free submission?

Fast:All the Web is a good second S.E.

I still submit to AltaVista, though it's not what it used to be. GigaBlast rounds out my free S.E.'s . . . At this time GB isn't that big, but who knows how it will be in a year or two's time.

Don't forget the ODP, and other, industry specific, directories.

I think that Inktomi is a very important engine. It's also possible to get into Inktomi free, but it takes time. Free submission at:

[submitit.bcentral.com...]

I usually wait until the site is fairly well linked (ie, with inbound links), preferably with an ODP listing (but that can take a while), before submitting.

If you're patient, an ODP listing, in fact, makes it unnecessary to submit to just about everything else... except maybe AltaVista.

Robert,

Great link. You have any others? Most of these recommendations, though, are still major search engines in my mind. I'm looking for the next tier below. Anyone else have suggestions?

One of the best suggestions I heard was to help find lower directories specific to your niche.

Search for your niche - eg "red gnomes"
now search those pages for the following
"add your URL"
"submit a site"

Secondary engines tend to do little traffic- but this will actually target the small amount of traffic a bit better

Elite,

Thanks. You had some real winners in that list.
