Do the top engines prefer 1000 page sites or multiple unique URLs?
Also: I want all pages of my site indexed, how come it takes long time for the engines to recognize those other new pages? They recognize the established pages and make the appropriate changes - how come not the new pages?

The alternate, is that with one site your putting all your eggs in one basket.
However, one site if designed well can pickup more incoming links, than a site that is in a sense several duplicated urls, hence share the links between and incoming.
I've always lent towards the single site fits all, but from a site navigation point of view it can be more complex, than having several domains hunting the same terms. Covering all the possible search terms out there, is a feat of massive planning.
How do they gain all 20 positions, either its a very very niche market, or the design strategy is out of this world with the incoming links accross the board to back it up.
Either its a very big company, or its fishy (SPAM), very quiet area, then i would more be looking a building bigger and better (SE and Reciprocal Link friendly sites), than worrying to much why you are not there.
