Increasing number of unique visitors

What are the best ways to do it?

Hi all,

I've got a client today whose site draws a low number of unique visitors - about 120 per day. He's given me the target of increasing it to 2000 per day. The site is already listed in appropriate cats in Yahoo and Dmoz and basic optimization has been done for the site.

What is the minimum time I should expect to increase it to about 1000? Also what are the best ways to increase it to the desired level of 2000 and how to do it at the earliest?

I am thinking of focussing on smaller directories but not sure if that would be of much help in this case.

I am of the belief that basic optimization is never done. Really I think the best thing you can do is build more content.

Other suggestions are:
PPC, build link popularity, do some discrete message board pimping.

Is there budget for PPC and banners?

Is he well promoted offline?

1000-2000 UV's a day is a helluva lot!

I take it we're not talking Bobs Biscuit shop here? Presumabley that is a realistic target?

Increasing the amount of pages on the site (and content proportionally) should serve to catch a few more search terms in the SERPs.

Some form of interaction on the site (discussion forum?) would be useful to encourage return visits.

Perhaps you should suggest tweeking the content and sales pitch in order to convert more sales from less visitors, than trying to get more visitors? Or a combination of both?
