Optimised text in a form

Does it get spidered effectively?

Hi All

Interesting to see the debate about layers, and I have something else to add.

We always recommend and try to get clients to use optimised visible text wherever possible. However a new example has emerged which we've never seen before.

So as not to alter the design too much, a client has put the optimised text at the bottom of the page in a scrolling box (sorry I'm not that technical, that may not be the best description).

Question is, is this an acceptable practise OR will it be ignored? Or worse, viewed as spamming? All our spider simulator tools see it fine, but that doesn't necessarily mean the engines will.

Any advice or opinions? Anyone out there who has used this method and seen results?

Cheers
Charon

PS: if it does work, I promise to let y'all know!

I have not used this method, or heard of it being widely used.

Can you clarify a little more about the scrolling box? Is it visible to the user and the search engines? Just the search engines?

If the box with the optimized content is not viewable to both the users and the search engines, it becomes questionable.

If I understand it sounds like it is in a visible textarea.

I am not completely sure about forms. As far as I understand spiders read it but don't follow the action. I personally think it would be better out of the form but that may not be an option.

Do you have to have the <form> tag to use <textarea>?

Could it not be:

<body>
The normal page
<BR /><BR />
<textarea>stuffing</textarea>
</body>
</html>

Or possibly

<iframe src=”overstuff.txt” height=”100” width=”100”><iframe>

yes, it's the first option, not the iFrame (I thought they couldn't be spidered?). As I said, our spider tools spider it fine. From what you guys are saying, it sounds like it'll be fine. However, we won't know until we do it so I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for all the help,
