Just a thought but I would like to see everyone's opinion on what markets as far as SEO goes are the most competitive.

The search engine optimisation market :)

I *assume* that will be the most competitive with every SEO / designer / newbie standing on each others' feet to get listed top

how about

casino/gaming
travel
various software

just off the top of my head, not necessarily true. Any market that lives and breathes online is more competitive and the longer it has been an online market the worse it is.

I can tell you which one isn't. Christian websites is probably the single largest niche category on the web (ODP lists 61,000) but it seems there are very few that are SEO'ed. Still it is very competitive because inbound links are so important in SERP's, and alot of sites have large amounts of them.

Hey Contractor,
How do you know who I am? lol...or are you just saying the SEO market in general.

I have ideas to my answers but Im just trying to get other opinions so that I can make a list.

I find it interesting,

It changes all the time just like most markets. I have seen office rental at £11.00! ( Now £ 1.83).

Consumer Info,

I don't - I was making a general statement. You never really understand each different market until you start optimizing a site for it ;)

>>>>the search engine optimization market

This is definitely a competitive market, but I don't think one of the most competitive.

I think some of the most competitive markets are:

- The keywords you see as the top 10 on wordtracker
- Pornographic, XXX market
- Gambling, casinos
- One word phrases like "Google", "news", "cars", etc.

The competitiveness of each market definitely varies and changes, and that is why keyword and market research is so important.

music industry - cds, mp3s
Web design

but I think the winner will probably be SEO.

Their a perspective thing in this.

Many SEO probably don't do their best work on their own site.

I think it's equal accross the board since the SE user is the deciding factor and want they "like" to type in.

How are we defining competitive? The most sites competing for a phrase, or the most money put into SEO for a phrase, or what?

I'd have to say most competitive is casinos, followed by porn, followed by credit cards, travel and merchant accounts in an ever changing order. I'll give V#agra an honorable mention.

Games, not the casino type.
