New SEO Directory.

A new SEO directory is in the process of being built. This one is different and better than those that have come before it. It features a top notch prolevel design and operation. It is also affiliate and self promotion free. It looks to be a true community service project and learning site for the author.

I've always be apprehensive about discussing new SEO directories because we've seen so many come and go. Some end up as cluttered affiliate sites within a few months of launch - some end up with suspect listings (eg: self promotion city) - and others are never kept up to date.

We not affiliated with the site or the author - I just think it is time for such a quality resource to get some air time.

The new directory is now accepting submissions for an official launch within a few months.

Okay, we know how you techies are always scrutinizing the speed of the search engines and directories when performing queries. We've now added a performance monitor for the search queries. We'd like to solicit feedback on what everyone thinks about the speed of the site, and any search queries you may perform, thanks!

We found 100 directory results in 0.0100 seconds that matched your request.

I like your thought process pageoneresults but since the archive has only 100 potential results and the likelihood that (except for a fellow SEO comparing the directory's competition) a client isn't going to search for all SEO, isn't this a little redundant, right now.

Just one perspective.

Plus it would take several hours at least to collect just search engine results for 100 SEO consultants. So if it takes less then 5 minutes, I bet the customer is happy! ;)

From a purely statistical perspecitve based solely on the review process - a company has a 1 in 2 chance if receiving some sort of ROI from the industry.

Acceptence rate 45.87%
Declined rate 43.58%

Interesting!

Probably, but, we wanted to be sure that the directory had all the bells and whistles before we start promoting to the public. Right now our focus has been on promotion to the SEO/SEM industry, and I think this speed statistic might be of benefit, if not now, maybe when we cross the 1000 mark. Even then, the queries will probably take less than a couple of seconds. Its all relative to how defined the search queries are.

Sorry pageoneresults I think I took your post out of context.

I'll spare some time this weekend "reviewing a review of the reviewed" and give an honest review for you to review. Hee Hee!

Don't know how much weight it will carry since I was rejected by the reviewers in the first place. LOL!

<One area I haven't received much feedback on are the DRPs (Directory Results Pages).
I had my programmer setup a randomizing script that allows for equal play amongst members in the directory. This prevents spamming and also allows for easier backend maintenance. I sure didn't want to get into playing with algos!>

This is the first thing I noticed about the results when I first visited the site. As the company I work for is at the bottom of the alphabetical totem pole I liked the idea of rotating results.

Its funny but I haven’t read through this forum discussion until today. Looking through I see comments that relate, especially the comment by bigjohnt:

whats that saying about "the cobbler's kids going barefoot!" I still don't have a site since I went solo.

I think it was a bit over a year ago or so that I asked Brett to give me a hint on how I could draw business and he said something about maybe a website of my own would help, especially listed in my profile. Well, ok – duh. I finally put one together and it was pretty good. Recently I had it redesigned and I think it’s better for me – mainly because my designer basically discounted everything I’d done before and what I thought would work for me and marched to the beat of his own drum – thank goodness. Since then it’s been a few months probably and I haven’t updated my content, at least not until I started thinking about submitting to this directory.

Reading through the submission guidelines is really cool. What I suggest and do for others is what I haven’t really taken the time to do for myself. This has helped push me to be even better for myself and I think that’s a good thing. Of course I was hoping I would be ready to submit today but now I’ve asked my designer to validate my css and I’m updating content and knowing me it will be a darn week or more of perfecting before I feel ok to submit.

Brett was right to suggest I put up my own site and my designer was right to realize that while I know a bit about SEO and feel confident with website promotions I am as I’ve admitted an idiot with design and technical aspects of website development.

Anyway, I’m hoping I can get this all together and ready for submission. I like that I’m being pushed beyond where I am presently and that the support and encouragement of this community, which we can continue to do for each other, be better than we once thought we were.

Thanks for putting this together pageoneresults. I’m encouraged that with effort I’ll be one of the accepted instead of one of the denied;) [And that’s not meant to be a shameless plug for inclusion because in essence this opportunity is pushing me to present myself in even a better light, living up to my potential and I believe that is good]

As an additional side note – I really like the item 12 Make sure your content is up to date. I think it does help now to add the date I’ve updating my information on a page, especially as it does change so frequently. I check out other experts around here sites all the time, looking at profiles and such and hey, many of us are behind in our presentation of what’s current in the industry.

paynt, thanks for your comments on the directory.

I've already got a spot reserved for you!

Update 2 06.13.2002

We've been working on making the database spider friendly and have completed the profile pages for now. The ? will be gone shortly. We've run spider tests on the database and everything from the Consultants Profile is visible to the spider.

This means that those of you who have submitted, should take a very close look at your titles and descriptions as those are the two areas that we are focusing on. The content in your actual profile is just as important and we may need to shift some things around here and there to present the core content first.

We'll keep you updated within this thread. Now, let me go work on that Yahoo! Editor's Pick!

Update 06.21.2002

Whew, okay, we've finally settled down a bit and can now expand the content within the directory. We've got much more planned in the next 60 days and the response so far has been outstanding!

I think you'll find that we've done an excellent job of reviewing and selecting consultants and/or companies for a listing in the directory. We definitely want you to know that we are not perfect, but we improve as each day goes by and will continue to do so.

Here are some recent stats covering the period 06.01.2002 thru 06.19.2002...

Page Views (Impressions) 36,683
Average Per Day 1,834
Document Views 15,866

Visitor Sessions 4,942
Average Per Day 247
Average Visitor Session Length 00:13:34

We can work that for now! I like the 13:34 average visitor session length. As we expand membership and add more content, that number should slowly rise. I'd like to see it around the 16:00 or greater mark!

P.S. You'll find a new link in the footer navigation called In The News. This will take you to a page documentating all the resources that we've been mentioned in since inception which was January 2002. I'm going to nurture and cherish that page, or I should say pages because I'm going to need to add a whole bunch more! ;)

Well congrats on the success of the site. Always nice to see a good free independent resource started. I hope you can make it work long term without an obvious revenue stream to support it.

What do you say we start to wind down this thread? I think it's been enough time and a fair share of exposure. (Starting to get more requests from commercial folks to do the same. We need to be fair about it.)

Sorry Brett, if you wanted this thread to be over but I have a question for pageoneresults. Just curious about this update with Google. I've noticed with this update that for our main terms now the SEO Directory shows up along side our listings. It's actually really a nice link and I've been getting some good traffic started over the past few days.

I'm just wondering how you feel pageoneresults about this update as it relates to the directory and if others have noticed a change in traffic patterns and results because of your listing in the directory.

Hello paynt, funny you should ask that. If I'm seeing what is a strong indication of what is to come, this update is awesome! I don't want to get too excited yet, but I have a feeling that we have a PR8 coming once the weekend is over with. Keep an eye on the directory these next few days and you'll see what I mean.

And yes, there seems to be a filtering effect going on with members in the directory. We've seen a spike in traffic since the dance began and I see that continuing as we move forward with our campaign.

Yes, there has been quite a bit of activity going on between visitors and members. We've started a members testimonial page but I don't think everyone is ready to fess up just yet! ;)

Its funny, we see regionally specific terms appearing in our stats, and then a little while later an SEO from that same region submits. We've been able to tie in each and every one of those searches with the submissions that came in. For most of them, we were in the #1 position. I can see the value that would have for new members, and existing members.
