The use of newsgroups...

Exactly what is the usage for SEO?

Forgive me if these are dumb questions, but I'd really like to know...

A newsgroup to me seems to be a big message board, such as this. Is that correct?

Would placing a link to a site in your newsgroup "signature" be a good way to boost link popularity for an SEO targeted site (as long as you weren't spamming the newsgroup in question)?

The reason I'm asking, is I've heard using newsgroups were good for an SEO campaign, but I've never heard exactly HOW they are good for an SEO campaign.
Any help would be appreciated.

Usually, the newsgroups with your url in the sig are part of a marketing effort not really SEO.

You have probably seen them metioned together because they are considered the "basics" of online marketing...and they both remain effective.

btw- the posts probably won't help your SEO efforts directly because they show up on pages with dynamic urls, which usually don't get indexed. You will however find people start linking to your site if your posts are helpful and you have good content at your site...which does end up helping SEO.

Actually I have had excellent SEO results from a post in a message board that ocurred years ago. Somebody else made the post, but included a link to one of my websites. The post was indexed by several engines and I see a lot of traffic from it.
