Trapped in Darwin/BSD

Need GUI back

We just purchased a new mac and I'm trapped in the BSD prompt
not being able to get the GUI back. I've typed in "exit" and the mac
seems to start the GUI but throws me back in the BSD prompt. I'm using mac os 10 (panther).
