HI Everyone,

I am confused. AS you know,I am working with a client who needs to optimize his web site. One of competitors, who seems to be everywhere, high se ranking, does not have a title to their web site. How is it possible then that a description shows in the web browser?
Comments greatly appreciated.

Seems very strange are you sure they don't have a <title> tag in the source code?

Yes, I checked again and all they have is their name?
I suppose this is fine once you are branded, but how did they get to this point? what did the search engines read when they came to the site?
Thanks for your reply

There are plenty of websites with no title.

People place way too much emphasis on what is on the page.

Now granted - title is pretty darn helpful, but you don't need it.

For example - do a search for:

[google.com...]

Notice non of the top 10 results contains those keywords in the title.

Other Titles of Interest:

Amazon.com--Earth's Biggest Selection
eBay - The World's Online Marketplace
MapQuest: Home
CNN.com
Monster - Never Settle - provided by Monster

Notice none of these titles are laced with keywords. You don't need them if you have a content rich site and good linking from other sites.

If there is no title tag at all?

I am not sure what google lists - I think they just use the domain name. Such as goto.com. They have overture listed as "overture".
